The Lowepro Primus AW bag wins Innovative Product of the Year
at the Camera of the Year Imaging Awards 2007–2008
The Primus AW particularly impressed the panel with its unprecedented use of recycled materials, as follows:
"Photography has often been involved in the promotion of environmental issues through the power of the picture, but it’s less common to have an imaging product which makes a direct contribution through the way it’s manufactured. Lowepro has been an innovator in the design of camera bags and backpacks for 40 years, and the company’s many ‘firsts’ include plastic buckles, contoured shoulder straps, all-weather covers, moisture proof zippers, a modular carrying system and the fully floating backpack. And this is beyond the vast variety of sizes, shapes and styles that Lowepro has introduced since the company was started in 1967. Not surprisingly, then, Lowepro has become closely associated with the wilderness and wilderness photography which makes its Primus AW camera backpack an even more significant product.
"Its interesting design elements aside, the big deal with the Primus AW is that just over 50 percent of the materials employed in its manufacture are recycled. You might be tempted to shrug your shoulders and say ‘so what?’, but this is to greatly underestimate what was involved to achieve this. The pack’s outer covering is mostly made from a tough material called Cyclpet which is derived from recycled PET plastic drink bottles. Lowepro has worked out that each Primus AW pack saves 22.6 drinks bottles from ending up in landfill and conserves 15,600 kJ or energy, 0.68 litres of refined oil and 0.002 of a barrel of crude oil. All this translates into a reduced impact on the environment which Lowepro specifically matches to the melting of the polar icecaps … the energy savings in one Primus AW pack equate to the heat required to melt one ton of ice in a 24 hour period. For this reason, for every Primus AW pack sold, a donation is made by Lowepro to Polar Bears International (PBI), a non-profit organisation established by the wildlife photographer Dan Guravich and dedicated to conserving the animal’s population worldwide.
"Not surprisingly, the Primus AW pack also includes some design innovations, including silent zippers which can be opened or closed without disturbing sharp-eared wildlife. Other features include an adjustable eight-point harness (‘Dryflow’ lined to wick away perspiration), an expandable camera compartment and expandable side pockets, a seam-sealed all-weather cover, access points in the pack’s lumbar support and a built-in memory card pouch.
"Lowepro is to be highly commended for taking this initiative, but even beyond its use of recycled materials, the Primus AW backpack is very much a product which offers real benefits to photographers … very possibly even helping to ensure we actually have something to photograph in the future."
