About Maxwell International Australia
ABN 28 121 735 153

Maxwell has, in various forms, been a leading Australia-wide distribution company for photographic and associated equipment for over four decades.

The name 'Maxwell' first surfaced in Australian photo distribution in 1959, with the formation of Maxwell Photo Optics and the launch of the Nikon F camera. The company was a subsidiary initially of 16mm Australia Pty Limited and then Bell & Howell Australia. The name Maxwell came from the first General Manager of the company, Maxwell Adams, or Max as he is known to his friends.

In 1983, Maxwell Photo Optics ceased trading and a new company was formed, called Maxwell Optical Industries Pty Ltd. This was a wholly Australian-owned company. Over the next 23 years the company grew rapidly, proudly distributing products from Nikon, Lowepro, Tamron, Velbon, Sunpak, Pelican, UniRoss, Live Picture, Mamiya and many more well known imaging companies.

In October 2006, Maxwell Optical Industries ceased, and two new companies were formed. First was Maxwell International Australia Pty Limited, distributor for Lowepro bags, Tamron lenses, Cokin filters, Pelican hard cases (Photo channel only) and Velbon tripods. The second company resulted in the formation of Nikon Australia Pty Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Nikon Corporation of Japan to take over all Nikon Imaging and Nikon Sports Optics distribution.

Maxwell International Australia is now headquartered in Homebush, a western suburb of Sydney, Australia, just a few hundred metres from Telstra Stadium in Sydney's Olympic Park. Maxwell International Australia is a wholly-owned subsidiary of DayMen Worldwide, in Toronto, Canada. Corporate operations headquarters are now now operated from Sebastopol, California, USA, location for the designs of Lowepro's award-winning camera, video and computer bags. DayMen is the owner of the Lowepro brand and trademarks throughout the world.
